Welcome Editorial – SEOs Ongoing Deception And The Unassailable Rise of Quality Content.
The allure of SEO as a dominant marketing tactic was always a lie, and it's becoming evident that it was more of a distraction than a genuine strategy. The timeless fundamentals of marketing—crafting high-quality content, prioritizing valuable products, and robust branding and promotion—have always held. It's time to build brands, not blogs, and employ the skills of a professional marketer.

A Journey through Time in Marketing

Forty years. That’s how long I’ve been in the world of marketing. Over that time, I have witnessed the marketing landscape undergo seismic shifts, evolving from traditional to digital and everything in between. My beginnings as a young product manager at Coca-Cola gave me experience in nurturing major international brands, understanding their core values, and navigating them through bustling marketplaces. This hands-on experience was the bedrock for co-founding several business ventures, including a marketing consulting firm, a market research business, and a software firm.

The Dawn of the Web and SEO

Yet, among my myriad of business experiences, it was the inception of the web that stands out vividly. I was there, watching with anticipation as the search engine wars waged a clear leader yet to emerge. Then, almost without notice, a clear winner with a strange name surged from the pack, unveiling a groundbreaking search technique: the PageRank algorithm. And Google was born. But it wasn’t just a new search method; it was the genesis of an entire new industry: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

The SEO Gold Rush and Google’s Retaliation

As SEO took off, it resembled a modern-day gold rush. Swarms of content creators, soon known as bloggers, flocked to it, aware that deciphering the code behind the algorithm could propel their content to the first page of the Google search result (SERP). Being on the first page meant pageviews, and that meant potential income.

Alas, the focus for many bloggers became gaming the algorithm rather than creating quality content. Somewhat understandably, Google took exception to this. Their goal was to dominate the search industry, and they could only do that by ensuring their clients, internet users, could easily find quality content. So Google retaliated by releasing improvements to its algorithm, each update designed to counter SEO gimmicks and get better at identifying quality. And with each update came howls of vitriol as many bloggers’ pageviews collapsed. And each time this happens, the real solution goes unnoticed by many.

To innoculate yourself against the dreaded Google update, you must produce quality content and build a quality product.

The Reality: Quality Over Gimmicks

Today, as we look back, the days of keyword stuffing or buying backlinks seem almost quaint, an artifact of the past. And yet the tireless and wasteful endeavor to decode Google’s ever-evolving algorithm continues; the SEO industry forever promising they can help you know and game the algorithm. It’s frustrating and draining to watch; frankly, it’s not why anyone starts blogging.

The undeniable reality is that Google’s algorithm is too robust to game. Backlinks now have a much-reduced impact on PageRank, and when they do matter, they are being heavily scrutinized. Quality factors like branding and website design are now more vital markers, and the advent of AI-powered search will end the SEO game once and for all. Even Google fears facing real competition from Microsoft’s Bing search product.

The idea that you can still target long-tail keywords in the hope of slowly growing authenticity is an absolute fallacy now. The numbers never made sense, and AI makes semantic matching and determining a searcher’s real question so much easier and more precise that closely related keywords will not matter anymore.

Today, if bloggers want to grow a substantial audience, they will have to do it in other ways and let SEO boost them after establishing themselves. One skill set is now the secret and was always the absolute path to success.

The SECRET: Marketing Over Mechanics

Understanding the digital landscape will always be necessary. You need to know SEO basics, but timeless marketing principles remain the cornerstone of success. Marketing is not just about getting seen; it’s about resonating, building trust, and fostering genuine connections. The modern blogger’s required skill set is knowing how to make great products, brand them, and promote them.
