Navigating Googles PageRank Evolution: The Rise and Fall of Backlink Strategies
Backlink propagation in todays SEO landscape is becoming meaningless. Google's rigorous updates, beginning with Penguin, continue at full pace and render many backlink schemes and tactics obsolete. Googles PageRank algorithm places less emphasis on backlinks in favor of quality content and branding which is now the cornerstone of modern SEO success.
John Hughes

Google’s PageRank system was pivotal to it winning the search wars in the early 2000s. PageRank is driven by a powerful algorithm which compures a score for the digital content they find enabling content to be ranked. A significant contributor to the PageRank algorithm has been the backlink metric. But what is a backlink?

A backlink is simply a link to a page from another page. The not-unreasonable assumption was that the more backlinks a page received, the better the page.

However, since its inception, the backlink metric has been under consistent attack from bloggers looking to gain an advantage in their PageRank score. The widespread use of link-building schemes and backlink spamming threatened the effectiveness of this critical PageRank element, potentially undermining Google’s advantage over its rivals.

Google has been continuously combating this backlink manipulation. They have gotten clever at understanding and rewarding backlinks from appropriate sources rather than just the total number. They have also been continuously moving their algorithm away from a reliance on backlinks to the point where they now contribute much less to the PageRank score than ever before.

We’re now reaching a point where attempting to game the backlink system is becoming increasingly futile and unrewarding and can even result in penalizing web pages.

From Academic Concept to Search Engine Core

To understand the importance of backlinks to the early efforts of Google Search, let’s examine where the idea originated and why it works.

Universities employ a method known as citation analysis. Citation analysis counts the frequency of a journal article’s citations by other articles. This approach is based on the premise that a higher number of citations indicates a greater importance of the article. These articles are then cataloged with the citation count displayed alongside each entry. Researchers can use these comprehensive lists to identify and access high-quality materials relevant to their field.

The system works because, in academia, an individual’s influence in their field is heavily influenced by their authority and reputation. Any manipulation or deceit within this system can severely affect their professional career.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google and Ph.D. students at Stanford University, were undoubtedly familiar with this technique. Their genius was applying this concept of citation importance to web pages, forming the foundation of Google’s search algorithm.

The Internet’s Backlink Misuse

Unlike the integrity-driven academic environment, the internet operates differently. Given the significance of achieving high rankings in Google’s PageRank system, many internet users forged careers focused on understanding and manipulating the rankings. This field is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and it remains a dynamic and crucial part of the blogging world today.

From the start, users eagerly sought any means of gaining an advantage, even if it involved gaming the system. Many created artificial backlink farms, setting up networks of irrelevant web pages designed solely to host backlinks. Additionally, there was the option to purchase page links from companies that would embed your backlink across their network of largely irrelevant web pages, further manipulating the PageRank.

Google’s Ongoing Response: Penguin and Beyond

The crucial role of backlinks in Google’s ranking system resulted in the company’s strong and continuous response against these manipulative practices. They have consistently refined their algorithms, resulting in the 2012 Google Penguin update, which marked a significant shift in how PageRank evaluated backlinks. The change impacted numerous sites and posts and was met with howls of protests from many bloggers.

It’s worth considering what impact this update would have had on the ranking’s of those bloggers who vocally protested the loudest had they simply focused on producing quality content in the first place. Evidently, Google’s updated algorithm deemed their content subpar. Since the update aimed to address backlink manipulation its reasonable to assume that the affected posts likely suffered from a combination of poor quality and reliance on aggressive backlink scamming schemes.

Google’s response continues today. John Mueller from Google recently clarified that the number of backlinks and unique referring domains don’t significantly impact their ranking algorithms, indicating a shift towards qualitative evaluation. (1)

Also, from Google, Guy Nguyen emphasized in November 2022 that backlinks have far less impact today; “backlinks as a signal has a lot less significant impact than when Google Search first started many years ago. We have robust ranking signals, hundreds of them, to make sure that we can rank the most relevant and useful results for all queries.” (2)

Google’s reliance on backlinks continues to decline as a pagerank factor, slipping to third behind “Consistent publication of High-Quality Content, and Keywords in Meta Title Tags. (3)

Further, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in evaluating backlinks will undoubtedly refine Google’s backlink processes. AI’s ability to discern and assess the quality and relevance of backlinks means that only those earned through genuine, quality content are likely to have a lasting impact. This technological advancement suggests that the relentless pursuit of backlinks through any means other than organic merit is becoming increasingly futile.

The Ideal Blogger Strategy: Quality Content Creation

It is becoming increasingly clear that the most effective strategy for bloggers, both now and historically, revolves around creating high-quality, valuable content. This approach naturally generates organic backlinks and aligns with Google’s preferred practices.

Producing informative and engaging content that not only appeals to readers but also ensures its relevance and resilience against changes in search algorithms will become the norm.

This shift towards prioritizing high-quality content is a positive development for the internet. Weeding out inferior content will improve outcomes for readers and creators alike. Creators will become incentivized to produce more meaningful and impactful content, leading to an improved experience for everyone.

Successfully combating backlink scamming is a win-win scenario, undoubtedly elevating the standard of what we find and share online to everyones benefit.
