COURSE – OTHER CHANNELS

Chapter 2    Chapter 3     Chapter 4

INTRODUCTION

There are dozens of opportunites to hlep spread the word about your blog site. You can even earn an income from some of them at the same time like Medium or Patreon.

But remember – Time is your enemy. You don’t have enough of it so you have to prioritize. Pick the ones that you think will give you the most return. Test and test and then change things that aren’t working by using different techniques on that channel or finding new channels.

Influencers

Influencers can have a powerful effect on “influencing” the opinions and tastes of their followers. This can have a significant affect on your brand or product offering to the upside. Of course it does not come without risk.

An influencer’s appeal works much the same way as any celebrity endorsement. They effect the way people feel about a product and can have strong impact on sales. Think Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods and Nike.

They work because the influencer is respected by the other in topics that others are interested in. To that end the level of their impact is a function of EAT which you have seen before in SEO discussions.

The perceived level of Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness in a category or niche area will have a direct bearing on the level of effect the influencer can have on the decision-making process.

The highest the EAT factor the higher the effect. This is also usually accompanied by the higher the EAT factor the higher the cost to use that influencer.

It has been argued that because the internet influencer is lower down the food chain when compared to the broad stream celebrity, they are more effective, more relatable, and therefore more effective. I’m not too sure about that. Take Kim Kardashian for instance. Whilst she is a heavy user of the online world and her Instagram following is stratospheric, her fame was largely built in the offline world or major reality TV. She is not the type of influencer we are talking about here and not someone most bloggers could afford.

People are influenced by them because they relate, to and want to be like them. They admire them and respect their opinions. In a buying situation where there is a limit to the amount of information a shopper can harvest online, a recommendation from an influencer that the person relates to and trusts can have a significant impact on the decision.

The child has tested every parent – “I want the bat that Mike Trout users!”

Thuy has their risks. If an influencer blows up, like say in a scandalous drug bust then the impact on the brand can be the opposite, and this is when you often see major sponsors screaming for the exits.

Nonetheless, if it would benefit your niche topic, and you can build a business case for it then you should consider it.

Start small and measure the effect. Then it is the business case, revenue – the amount spent is great enough to continue with it. As always measurement is the key. It is also not a tactic I would be deploying until you have a well-monetized site and specific unique products to sell.

The law is also changing with influencers now requiring full disclosure, meaning that they need to inform their followers that they receive rewards for using certain products. However, this doesn’t seem to affect the sponsorship world in sport, probably because they actually use the product and are unlikely to use something that would lessen their performance.

medium

Medium is one of the biggest blogging platforms on the internet with over 150 million visitors a month. Its also highly regarded by Google. Not only can you create brand awareness for your blog site and pageviews but Medium will also pay you every time someone reads your article on the platform.

But there are thousands of people writing for Medium and being found and followed requires work. So it becomes another SEO operation or paying to boost your articles until you reach a threshold that will enable you to write and earn some money.

The catch to getting paid is that you need to join their “Partner Program“, and have at least 100 followers. So you will need to work on it.

But it can still be a good place to distribute your content to another audience and since the content is already created on your site you may as well post it here as well. Over time your following will grow and you can join the program and get paid.

There can be problems posting the same content to multiple places so rather than just posting your original work repurpose it for this channel. We have spoken about repurposing before (here) and it is probably a better strategy since Google doesn’t seem to like it and there is a chance you will be accused of plagiarism.

Explore your niche on Medium and determine what type of articles are typically posted. How long are they, how detailed, and what sort of readers are interested in them.

I have found that many articles on Medium are shorter quicker reads, with few images, and more point-form lists. But it will vary in every niche so join medium, the free version, seek out articles in your niche, and follow and read a number of articles.

Remember these are also your competition so you will need to be better than them.

Growing your Medium following

In order to get paid for your writing on Medium, you need to join the partner program and get at least 100 followers. These tips will help you get those followers.

Write great content

It’s tiring to read this every time – unfortunately, it is just a reality. You need to be interesting to follow. If you just re-hash the same old stuff that everyone does you won’t get followers.

Offer a different point of view, or be controversial in a respectful manner, but just try and be different in some way. maybe you are a funny person then use humor, maybe you see things from a different perspective.

Make sure you use punchy headlines and images to get views. It’s the same as launching your blog but now you are doing it to create a profile and ultimately drive people to your blog site. So leave things out, or promise more in the full post.

Hook your potential readers early

Use headlines that attract emotion – see Course – Advertising and Course – Copywriting.

And then get to the main points of the quickly.

When I first started writing research reports I was given one simple rule – well three really.

1. Tell them what you are about to tell them

2. Tell them

3. Tell them what you just told them

Repitition means you might get something through.

1. Give them the answer. Don’t muck around with silly long-winded statements. Take recipe sites now – all trying to establish report and connection.

Declarative one sentence opener
2–3 sentences
Transition into main points fast
Many writers spend time meandering in their intros and they don’t focus on hooking attention.

Their intros are too long as well. You need to give the reader a reason to dive into the content fast.

Let’s break down some intros from top writers to see how they work. After that, I’ll give you some specific intro formulas you can use.

Hit up your friends and family

Write an email explaining that you are writing for Medium, an online general interest magazine. Explain that you need 100 followers in order to get paid and that you would really appreciate their help in getting to that number.

In the email include a link to one of your Medium stories.  Ask them to follow the link and when at the site to join  Medium, emphasize that it costs nothing.

Then ask them to press the follow button next to the story title.

Save the email to your drafts and then begin sending it to all of your family and friends whenever you have the time. You could just construct a complete list right now and get it underway.

Watch your followers grow. If the family isn’t joining send them another email – embarrass them into it.

Post often

Its a bit like the blog you are growing, you need to post often in order to get noticed. Since the reason you are there is to promote your blog then you should be re-purposing all your content for Medium and posting it.

Post as often as possible and as consistently as possible. Every time you complete a post for your site re-write it into a shorter form or create more than one from it and post to Medium.

If you make it one of your post-promotional activities then it will just become a discipline that you do automatically.

So make it a part of all your post-promotional activities.

Also, think about writing many medium posts from the one blog post you have written. Especially if it is a pillar post. These larger posts can quite easily be turned into a number of smaller ones. Many Medium reads are quite short.

Choose three subjects to post about – these can be the same three buckets of general post topics you are writing about in your blog. Write in these three areas from the material you have collected on your posts. It’s the quickest, just write them in a more abbreviated fashion.

One or two posts on Medium are not going to cut it. To get found and followed you are going to need hundreds.

Be consistent

Stick to your niche. Readers are coming to you because of what you write about, but if you cast around too broadly you will just become a bit of a hit-and-miss entity. Readers will never quite know whether reading one of your articles is what they want to read about.

Re-launch old posts

If you have older posts that are not performing then delete them, re-work them a little, and relaunch. Your earlier articles may have been missed as you are growing.

Use great images and titles.

These are the ads you use to entice people to read your articles. The more articles people notice from you and read the more likely they are to follow you. Getting noticed is the job of the Title and Image. Use them well.

Follow people that engage

Keep an eye on the comments you receive for your articles. These people have already shown an interest in your material.

So now follow them. The number of people that will follow you back will surprise you. It’s sort of a mutual gratification regime involving the idea of reciprocity. Because you followed them there is a feeling that they must repay the kindness.

Engage With Others

This is a bit of a game on many sites where growing your follower base is a case of “follow me and I’ll follow you”. I get followed numerous times a week by people who have are simply looking for a return follow. Do I help them out. It depends.

Always respond to comments (at least the meaningful ones)

Engagiong with your audience is the way to grow a following. If you just read your comments and then let them slide you will not create the type of relationship with your readers that will lead to followers. Talk to them as though they are fired, with respect for them and their ideas. Never engage with spiteful comments and never be aggressive your self. You never know who is reading the comments section.

Encourage comments. End every post with an invitation. Something like – “Hey I’d love to hear your opinion. What do you think on this subject?”

SEO

SEO is important on Medium because of its nature.

make sure you do all the simple things well;

Great headlines,

Answer a need early in your article,

Engage early for at least 30 seconds –

Read Ratio Rules
Read ratio is the percentage of readers who stay on your article for at least 30 seconds. It’s a crucial factor in Medium’s algorithm and earnings formula.

So, pay exaggerated attention to the start of your article:
– in educational content, quickly establish your credibility and confirm what the article is about. Then jump into the first lesson.
– In opinion and personal essays, start with a controversial thought or a strong emotion.

The Silver Lining

Medium pays authors based on the number of views they get. To get paid you need to join their partner program and to do that you need to get 100 followers.

So once you have your following join the program and create that extra revenue stream for an activity you are doing already.
