Online publishing platforms are essentially online magazines that invite anyone who wants to to write for them. The quality of the writing must be high and the topics must match the particular leaning of the publication. The editors then curate what they publish to ensure the quality and standard reflects the positioning of the publication.

They are generally a gated content model were readers can read a certain amount of material for free but once that limit is reached you have to pay to read. Writers are rewarded depending on how many people read the articles they write. The more readers they get the more they are rewarded.

Cultivate an audience online (it can be a small audience) then, work with brands that will pay you to talk about them with your audience.

One of the easiest ways to get brand deals is through sponsored networks like Activate.

WRITING PLATFORMS

There are many writing platforms that will pay you for your content. Often the amount you get paid is determined by how many people read your articles and the length of time they stay there. In effect they are creating a magazine and paying others to write the content for them based on popularity.

However, some require that you meet minimum standards before they start paying you. Medium for example requires that you have at least 100 followers before you can join their partner program. A bit rude really when you consider how easy this is to game. Most people can find 100 friends and family to help them out here or even just follow others in return for being followed back. Its a fairly lame way of judging worthiness.

But there are other ways you can use these networks to make money even if they wont let you join.

Affiliate Marketing – If you have an affiliate marketing business just post your normal blogs on Medium as well as your website. You may not get much traction but its very little effort to spread the word a bit further. Eventuially you will get the 100 followers.
